Martin Declaration: one of first Slovak state-building moves

On 30th October 1918 in the northern town of Martin, Slovaks founded the Slovak National Council and declared their affinity to the new state, namely the Czechoslovak republic. This was inked within a document known as the so-called Martin Declaration. During her visit to Martin on Tuesday, the Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová praised the historic declaration, calling it "one of the first state-building moves by the Slovak nation".
