The city of Bratislava will have a Velvet Revolution Square as of mid-November, with this name being given to part of SNP Square, specifically the area in front of the Old Market Hall in the city centre, TASR learnt on Thursday. This move is linked to the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution, the legacy of which the capital wants to preserve for future generations. The proposal was approved by Bratislava councillors on Thursday. Bratislava mayor Matus Vallo came up with the initiative to rename part of SNP Square to Velvet Revolution Square in the summer, explaining that the Velvet Revolution, like the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) during WWII, symbolises public opposition to totalitarianism and was an expression of the will of the people for freedom. SNP Square was where crowds calling for change gathered during the Velvet Revolution.
