Banks’ profits grew 18.2 percent in January

The banking sector in Slovakia reported a taxed profit of €54.9 million for the first month of this year. According to the Slovak Central Bank, this represents an increase of 18.2 percent year-on-year mainly thanks to a growing retail segment.

Bankers stated that the overall performance of the sector was greatly influenced by one of the highest bank levies in Europe, which banks sought to offset by the lowering costs accompanied by growth of their business activity.
