Displeased farmers set up party

Dissatisfied farmers delivered 12,600 signatures to the Interior Ministry on Monday, and applied to register their new political party called 'We've Had Enough of This!' The party wants strong regions and rural areas, to prevent Slovakia from being sold out, to protect the countryside, including forests, and to support small local firms of all types. They also want to reduce corruption and make the law more enforceable. "None of us wanted to enter politics. During the protests we were joined by surveyors, foresters, health-care workers, teachers and pensioners. We found out that it's not only farmers who have taken a beating in the fields, but that the same picture applies to all sectors in Slovakia," said farmer Frantisek Oravec. According to the Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry, against whom farmers have publicly protested since last year, the party's emergence is proof enough that the actual goal of the farmers' protests was for their representatives to enter politics. More than 150 political parties and movements are registered in Slovakia.
