African swine fever continues to spread

The first case of African swine fever in Slovakia to occur outside the eastern district of Trebišov has been identified. On Monday, media reported that a dead adult wild boar with the virus had been found in the neighboring district of Michalovce. This case occurred two months after the first case of African swine fever in Slovakia was identified and localized solely within the district of Trebišov.

According to the Agriculture Ministry, a total of sixteen cases of African swine fever in Slovakia have been registered in wild boars and eleven in domestic pigs to date. Samples from wild boars are constantly being examined at the National Reference Laboratory in Zvolen, central Slovakia. The first case of African swine fever virus (ASFV) in Slovakia was confirmed among domestic pigs bred in the village of Strážne in the district of Trebišov on July 24. The first case of an ASFV-positive wild boar was confirmed in the same district on August 12.
