Law on abortions not to be amended

The law on abortions will remain unchanged, as the Parliament on Wednesday did not approve any of the four amendments the opposition had presented to it. The closest one to passing, receiving 68 votes, was the amendment by the OĽaNO party, which wanted to introduce allowances for pregnant women in order to decrease the number of abortions. The least support was given to the far-right Peoples Party Our Slovakia's amendment, which wanted to tighten up abortions on request. "Discussion and compromise are necessary to amend the law on abortions as the issue shouldn't be misused for political purposes," stated Parliamentary Chair Andrej Danko (Slovak National Party), adding that some opposition politicians had abused the legislation process. On Sunday, around 50,000 pro-life supporters showed up at a demonstration in Bratislava, including the members of the extremist far-right party.
