September 26 has been proclaimed by the Council of Europe as the European Day of Languages. Its aim is to encourage language learning across Europe as well as to promote awareness among the public of the importance of protecting linguistic heritage. Even though the official language spoken in Slovakia is the Slovak language, the second most used language is Hungarian, however, you can also find many people speaking English, Czech, Rusyn and Ukrainian. Outside of Slovakia, the Slovak language is mostly spoken due to historic mass migration in the United States, the Czech Republic as well as in Hungary.
