The recent developments in Ukraine and the region of Crimea in particular, are the matter of worries and discussions throughout the whole of Europe, and Slovakia as a Ukrainian neighbouring country in particular. The Slovak president Ivan Gašparovič stated on Sunday, that Slovak citizens can still remember the events from the year 1968, when such a foreign military intervention stopped the undergoing democratization processes in the former Czechoslovakia, and at the same time he believes that armed conflict will not resolve anything.
The Slovak President has also announced the meeting of the three highest Slovak political officials to take place on Monday, early afternoon, with the main topic discussed being the on-going situation in Ukraine. On the same day also the NATO proceedings continue with the meeting of Foreign ministers, who will meet also on the European Union level. According to the Slovak Prime Minister, Robert Fico, the Security Council of the Slovak Republic will decide on the next steps after the meetings in Brussels.
