Cars most used means of transport in Slovakia

Cars are the most frequent means of transport used in Slovakia (74.4 percent), followed by buses and trolleybuses (15.7 percent) and trains (9.9 percent), said Wood & Company analyst Eva Sadovská on Tuesday, citing data from Eurostat. Frequency is measured on the basis of distance covered by individuals. Sadovská was speaking in Slovakia during the 2019 European Mobility Week, which is designed to encourage people in Europe to choose public transport over cars. The analyst noted that the situation on roads in Slovakia was a lot different 25 years ago, when only 46.5 percent of transport was covered by cars, while buses made up as much as 41.4 percent and trains were at 12 percent. Nevertheless, noted Sadovská, Slovakia still has the third-lowest share of car transport in the EU, falling behind Hungary (70 percent) and the Czech Republic (73.3 percent). She added that at the opposite end of the spectrum are Lithuania (with 91.1 percent) and Portugal (85.5 percent).
