Decisive talks on the shape of the future the European banking union will take place next month, Slovak Finance Minister Peter Kažimír said following his meeting on Wednesday with his German counterpart Wolfgang Schauble. Kažimír said that with Schauble they made the issue clear to each other at the meeting.
“With Germany, we have consistently similar attitudes in building a new integrated Europe,” said Kažimír. He added that in this case they advocate a strict approach in line with the saying: 'Nothing is for free'. “The golden rule must be that [if any problems emerge] the first one to pay will be the owner of the bank, and then large institutional creditors,” said Kažimír, adding that depositors must be protected in line with the law on protection of deposits.
