In July, Slovak banks gave mortgages with an average interest rate of 1.29%, having fallen by 0.07 percentage points year-on-year. The Slovenská Sporitelňa bank offered the lowest interest rate on the market at the level of 0.89%. Slovak banks thus managed to increase the number of mortgages in spite of restrictions introduced by the National Bank of Slovakia. In July 2019, people borrowed almost €865 million in mortgages, with the total number of overall debt in all types of credits having risen to €29.8 billion, representing an increase of almost 100% in five years. In 2014, the number was at the level of €16.5 billion.
