Farmers in Slovakia voiced their concerns about the flow-on effects of mild winter temperatures, with outbreaks of pests having the potential to impact crop yields.
“Such pests don't only include field animals such as mice and hamsters, but also various other pests such as maggots, eggs, caterpillars, aphids, and snails”, says Slovak Agricultural and Food Chamber (SPPK) spokesman Stanislav Nemec at a briefing on Tuesday, adding that higher numbers of pests will impact profits in the sector. Unusual warmer weather is also altering bee activity in Slovakia, with the insects coming out of hibernation prematurely, risking more bee die-offs due to cold night temperatures.
