A Ministry of tourism and sports on the horizon?

Parliament Speaker Andrej Danko insists on establishing a ministry of tourism and sports as of 2020. He announced this after meeting representatives of the Slovak tourism industry in Stará Lesná. The new ministry should have two state secretaries, and according to Danko it could be connected also with the organization of sports events, for instance. This is not the first time Andrej Danko has come up with the idea of setting up a new ministry. He has spoken about it also in connection with the introduction of holiday vouchers. Supporting his ideas are also the representatives of the tourist industry. Marek Harbuľák of the Tourism Association told the economic weekly TREND that since tourism is a cross-cutting industry and thus is governed by hundreds of laws and regulations issued by several ministries without coordination, it complicates business in this area. Currently the section on tourism is part of the Transport Ministry and in 2019 it had a budget of EUR 9.2 million.
