The opposition Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) Chairman Richard Sulik has convened an extraordinary congress of the party for September 7, where he plans to resign as party leader, and apply for the post again, aiming to confirm his position. Party vice-chair and former Defence Minister Lubomir Galko was mentioned as Sulik's possible counter-candidate, and he did not rule out after a congress in June that he would run for the post of party leader. Now he says that the convening of an extraordinary congress surprised him. "I thought it was definite that Richard Sulik would be party chairman until June 2020, that is until his mandate expires and at the same time that he would lead the party into the [general] election in 2020 as leader," he told the TASR press agency in response.
