Winemakers unable to compete with falsely labelled wines

The Slovak Guild of Winegrowers and Winemakers stated on Monday that it expects this year to be one of the worst in recent decades due to several factors that have brought an economically unbearable burden that could even put some of them out of business. The main factor is unfair competition in the form of cheap wine of unclear origin that has led to low prices for Slovak grapes, prices that don't even cover the cost of growing and harvesting grapes. Slovak winegrowers suspect that cheap wine is being imported into Slovakia from abroad in an uncontrolled manner in immense tanks. The wine is then poured into bottles in Slovakia and sold as a Slovak product, with labels promising domestic origin and high quality. According to head of the guild Miroslav Fondrk, it is becoming difficult or impossible for many legitimate Slovak winegrowers to compete with these practices, which appear to be growing from year to year.
