Prosecutor won’t appeal supreme court ruling on far-right party

Prosecutor-General (PG) Jaromir Čižnár has decided that he won't file a proposal with the Constitutional Court to examine a ruling of the Supreme Court, which decided in April that the far-right People's Party Our Slovakia (LSNS) needn't be dissolved, prosecutor spokesperson Andrea Predajňová stated on Monday. It was Čižnár who originally submitted a proposal to the Supreme Court in May 2017 to dissolve the party. He has argued that the party could pose a threat to democracy in Slovakia in the future, should it obtain enough seats in Parliament to carry out its programme objectives, and that one of its first moves in such a scenario would be to eliminate the possibility of its own dissolution. The head of the senate of the Supreme Court that issued the ruling, however, Jana Zemková, stated in April that there is no immediate risk of a threat to democracy in this case, as the LSNS party doesn't currently have enough MPs to push through laws that could put democracy in jeopardy.
