Slovakia ready to open U.S. Steel topic in Brussels

Slovakia is ready to open the topic related to the situation in Košice-based steel mill U.S. Steel in Brussels, too, according to Slovak Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini's (Smer-SD). Pellegrini thus responded to the petition by U.S. Steel employees in which they are calling upon the Government to address the situation in the steel industry. Last week, the management of U.S. Steel Košice announced that it would reduce the number of their workers by 2,500 by the end of 2021. "If EU representatives don't take urgent steps to create a fair business environment in Europe with equal conditions for all and the Slovak Government doesn't help increase competitiveness in Slovakia, especially in the field of energy prices, so that the steel industry can overcome the challenges and obstacles that are devastating it, our days are numbered," says the petition.
