30-metre flagpole in front of Parliament to best Budapest

Parliamentary Chair Andrej Danko (Slovak National Party/SNS) wants a 30-metre tall flagpole to be erected in front of Parliament and, according to Parliament spokesperson Tomáš Kostelník, this flagpole should be 3 metres taller than that the one in the Hungarian capital, Budapest. The price tag for the flagpole project should not exceed €34,000, VAT-free, stated Andrej Danko at a press briefing on Wednesday. "We have responsibly reached out to the Monuments Board officials and all relevant construction offices. Finally, we chose to erect a pole within our technical and other limits. This is certainly no race. It's more about Slovakia having the biggest flagpole possible," stated Danko, adding that a similar approach is seen also in other countries. In reaction, opposition MP Ján Budaj (OĽANO) stated on Wednesday that he was "shocked and dismayed by the most recent foofaraw of the Parliamentary Chairman, who for more than comical reasons, has decided to change the silhouette of Bratislava...", adding that he considers it a nonsensical waste of public resources.
