On Wednesday, Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová on her social media profile wished a lot of strength and success with maintaining the EU's unity to the newly elected President of the European Commission, Ursule von der Leyen. Čaputová also praised von der Leyen's commitment to being active in fighting climate change, a topic which is also among Čaputová's priorities.
Ursule von der Leyen, who has been Germany's Defence Minister, was approved as the new President of the European Commission as the first woman to serve in this post on Tuesday. She needed 374 votes and received only nine more. In her first speech after the approval, von der Leyen voiced her wish for Europe to be the first climate neutral continent by 2050. The new chair of the European Commission also said that she wants to announce her plan for green Europe within her first 100 days in her new post. As the next step, von der Leyen will work on the makeup of the entire commission and she said that she requires half of the candidates to be women.
