Far-right MP’s acquittal confirmed by Supreme Court

On Tuesday the Slovak Supreme Court dismissed the prosecutor's appeal against the acquittal of MP Stanislav Mizik of the far-right ĽSNS party. He faced prosecution for the crime of defamation of nation, race, and beliefs, and for producing and spreading extremist propaganda materials. The case dated back to January 2017 when on a social network Mizik attacked a list of personalities awarded by then-President Andrei Kiska, hinting among other things at their Jewish origin. The list included historian Ivan Kamenec, director Juraj Herz and Eva Mosnáková, who is actively engaged in commemorating victims of the Holocaust. However, the Specialized Criminal Court concluded last year that it had not been proven that the defendant committed the deeds, and acquitted the MP. The prosecutor appealed against this decision but the Supreme Court, whose decision is final, upheld it.
