Situation at Constitutional Court not sustainable

The current situation at the Constitutional Court is not sustainable in the long run, said President Zuzana Čaputová following her meeting with Constitutional Court Chairman Ivan Fiačan on Tuesday, according to Martina Goffová of the Presidential Office's press department. The president expressed regret that MPs failed to elect all the missing candidates in the most recent vote, noting that the Constitutional Court could have been fully functional as early as this week. She also expressed hope that Parliament will elect the full number of candidates in the next vote so that she can fulfil her duty and appoint the lacking judges. After nine judicial posts at the Constitutional Court became vacant in February, Parliament was tasked with electing 18 nominees, from which the president is to appoint the nine to the vacant posts. However, despite several attempts, lawmakers have so far selected only 14 candidates. Currently the Constitutional Court has seven out of 13 judges.
