In the first five months of 2019, the Sociálna Poisťovňa (SP) state insurer paid 11,137 men maternity benefits. Despite "maternity" suggesting that it applies to mothers, it is a unisex benefit. This is a figure coming close to the 2018 statistics, when the benefits were received by 12,836 men throughout the whole year. According to the state insurer, this number serves as evidence that there is a growing trend of maternity benefits being drawn by fathers. To compare, in 2016 it only concerned around 3,000 fathers.
