According to preliminary data from the Slovak government, since joining the European Union (EU) on May 1, 2004 until the end of last year, the country has received €6.7 billion from the EU budget.
Slovakia has been in a position of a net recipient, which means it receives more than it pays to the EU budget. In a new multiannual financial framework the country should receive a net sum of €13.5 billion, which is 16 percent more compared to the current period. The actual transfers will, however, depend on the real capabilities of Slovak entities, and the effective and timely absorption of funds from the EU budget.
