Slovak museums and galleries will join together this year in offering free admission to visitors during non-traditional hours on Saturday 18 May, which is International Museum Day. At over a hundred locations throughout Slovakia, exhibitions, interpretations, workshops, animations, shows, screenings and other attractive programs will be made available to the public. The aim of the event is to present in the most interesting way the country's cultural heritage, as well as the importance of its preservation for future generations. The open day is being organised by the Union of Museums in Slovakia (ZMS), as well as by representatives of the museum community. They wish to point out that their role as a memory institution is not only to entertain and exhibit, but above all to protect, because collections can only be exhibited if the items themselves are preserved. In Bratislava and the Bratislava Self-Governing Region (BOD) they have prepared a program involving 41 museums and galleries.
