In response to a deteriorating situation with underground water in Slovakia, the Environment Ministry on Wednesday unveiled a set of possible measures to be introduced at a local level. The ministry has launched a grant project, designed for local authorities and non-profit organisations, to create rain gardens, small water collection lakes, marsh areas, green roofs, and water absorption surfaces on car parks, for example. According to climatologist Pavol Faško, the lack of water from an arid 2018 is also continuing in 2019. Conceding that May has been wet so far, the climatologist said that evaporation is faster at this stage, so the situation with the underground water cannot improve significantly. Moreover, there is no guarantee that the summer will not be as dry as it was last year, he stressed.
