160 years since birth of Aurel Stodola

Bratislava commemorated the 160th anniversary of the birth of the Slovak-born inventor of steam and gas turbines Aurel Stodola with a series of lectures in a state owned Slovak gas facility. The event followed a whole range of celebrations that started in Zurich, Switzerland, last year and moved to several Slovak cities afterwards. The co-ordinator of the commemorative meetings in both countries Miroslav Šuvada has been studying the life and work of Stodola for 51 years. According to him, the inventor's career was augmented thanks to the financial support of the Swiss government of the time. Aurel Stodola, the inventor of the steam turbine and professor at what is now the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich known as ETH, was born on 11th May 1859 in Liptovský Mikuláš, in present-day northern Slovakia.
