The World Press Freedom Day is commemorated annually on 3rd May as was decided by the UN General Assembly in 1993. This year's World Press Freedom Day main topic is "Media for Democracy: Journalism and Elections in Times of Disinformation." On this occasion, the governments of the United Kingdom and Canada issued a call also to the government of Slovakia to tackle the problem of press freedom. In the call they inform that only 13% of the world population has access to a free press and that the past year was the worst in terms of violence committed on journalists. In accordance to this, the UK and Canadian governments welcome the efforts to bring to justice the culprits behind the murder of the Slovak investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fianceé Martina Kušnírová. In July, British Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt will be joined by his Canadian counterpart Crystia Freeland in organising the first global Conference for free press. They will bring together more than a thousand guests including foreign ministers, diplomats, international agencies, journalists, civic society representatives and scholars who will suggest steps to be taken to protect media freedom.
