In the ageing of Slovakia's population, the year 2018 means a breakthrough, as the number and share of seniors exceeded for the first time ever the number and share of children. The head of the population statistics department of the Statistics Office of the Slovak Republic Zuzana Podmanicka told journalists on Tuesday that 858,000 children under the age of 14 lived in Slovakia over the past year, which is 15.7% of the Slovak population while there were 874,000 seniors aged 64 and more in Slovakia, which is 16% of the population.
