Last year Slovakia granted asylum to 45 people, according to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. Only Estonia and Latvia granted asylum to fewer people than Slovakia. Last year 20 people from Yemen, 15 from Afganistan and 5 from Iraq received asylum in Slovakia. More than 300 000 asylum seekers were granted protection in EU member states in 2018. The figure is down by almost 40% from 2017. Out of the nearly 333 400 asylum seekers, almost 30% of the beneficiaries were Syrians. In addition to these, the EU Member States received over 24 800 resettled refugees.
