Cannabis seeds are expected to be removed from the official list of narcotic substances as of March 15, with Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič signing the relevant legislation on Tuesday, February 11.
This modification to existing legislation was drawn up by the Health Ministry with the announcement that cannabis seeds do not contain psychoactive chemical compounds known as cannabinoids; a class of chemical compounds which repress neurotransmitter release in the brain. Prime Minister Robert Fico announced in March of 2013 that smoking marijuana should eventually be made an offence, instead of a criminal act however cannabis plants currently remain on the list of illegal narcotic substances.
