The prices of pork and pork products will soon rise, said Eva Sadovská, an analyst from the Slovenské farmárske team, for the TASR press agency at the weekend. Slovak pork producers expect prices to grow by 8 to 10% in April already. According to Sadovská, breeding pigs is complicated as the animals are sensitive to diseases. Since 2000, the Slovak economy has recorded the steepest fall of the number of pigs within the EU - at a level of 60%. However, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Malta and Slovenia have seen similar drops. On the other hand, Spain is probably the only EU state with a significant hike in the number of pigs - over one third in the last few decades. Denmark also saw an increase by 6.1%. In the entire EU, the number has dropped by approximately 10%.
