President vetoes law that should limit singing of other states' anthems

President Andrej Kiska vetoed an amendment to the State Symbols Act and returned it to Parliament for reworking as a whole. Kiska views the act's provisions as contradicting the principle of legal certainty and thus also the rule of law. According to its critics, the law bans the singing or playing of anthems of foreign states at public events, if an official delegation of that state is not present. In addition to others, Parliamentary Chairman and Slovak National Party (SNS) leader Andrej Danko and Most-Hid leader Bela Bugar asked the president to return the law to Parliament for further discussions. Seeing as the President chose to return the entire bill, the Parliament can either override his veto and pass the motion in its original form or kill it, but not make any changes to it. An amendment to the State Symbols Act was submitted to Parliament by the Slovak National Party. It tabled the draft in response to a new logo displayed on national ice-hockey team jerseys, with an eye towards the greater protection of state symbols.
