Slovakia has the lowest average age for first-time mothers among the Visegrad Four (V4) countries (Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary), it was reported on Tuesday. While Slovak women on average give birth for the first time at the age of 27, the average age in the other three V4 countries is 28. The average for the EU as a whole is 29. The oldest first-time mothers are found in Italy (age 31) and in Spain and Luxembourg (both 30), while the youngest are found in Bulgaria and Romania (both 26) and Lithuania (27). According to analyst Lenka Buchalakova of Slovenska sporitelna, the current trend is that women are postponing motherhood, concerned about the economic aspect of motherhood. She added that women have to synchronise their family life with their work life more than men do, and that it's single women and mothers who are the most likely to suffer if unexpected financial expenditures arise.
