European Parliament to look into Slovak coal mining

The European Parliament's Committee on Petitions (PETI) will contact Slovakia with the requirement to explain the complaints of Bojnice spa against Upper Nitra Mines in Prievidza (both western Slovakia), said Karol Galek, MP of the opposition Freedom and Solidarity party after his return from Brussels. The cornerstone of complaints is the negative impact of brown coal mining. "As well as the letter for the Slovak Ministry, we will ask for written information from the European Commission. The coal burning power plant in Nováky creates 7% of the whole country's emissions. We are talking about huge numbers. It is only one plant, therefore we need to take it seriously," said Cecilia Wikström, chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Petitions.
