Slovak hauliers want to go on strike after the end of the Winter Olympics. They are unhappy with the impacts of changes to the toll collection system. In particular they argue that the fact that the toll went up by 20 percent from the start of this year will have a huge impact on small sole proprietors, potentially even liquidate many of them.
The Slovak Road Hauliers demand to cancel the tolls for intra urban transport or slash disproportionally high fines that came into effect this January. To settle the matter the Transport Ministry held talks with the carriers last Friday and plans to continue in discussions next week claiming that: “most of the requirements submitted by road carriers are further negotiable and it is possible to seek a solution that suits all parties,” as was stated by spokesperson of the ministry Martin Kóňa. However, after their Friday talk’s representatives of the Road Carriers announced that the discussions at the Transport Ministry were fruitless and that is why they will go on strike after the end of the Winter Olympic Games.
