According to the portal euractive.sk, the families of the murdered Slovak investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and the murdered Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizi sent an open letter to the Secretary-General of the Council of the EU Jeppe Tranholm-Mikkelsen in support of the Romanian candidate for European Chief Prosecutor Laura Kövesi. "The collapse of state law in our countries, Malta and Slovakia, led to the murders of members of our families… The same failure puts in danger the investigation of their assassination," reads the letter that was also sent to the EU Commissioner Věra Jourová. The families call for member states to choose the "most brave and best candidate for this position, a woman who is similar to Daphne and Ján: Laura Codruta Kövesi." If she were elected, it would be a signal "that there's no room for compromises in the fatal fight against corruption." Romania is currently the country presiding the EU Council. Its government has adopted several steps in order to block the nomination of its anti-corruption candidate.
