Dual citizenship still banned

The State Citizenship Act will not be amended and people will continue to lose their Slovak citizenship by acquiring that of any other country, as the Parliament turned down a proposal submitted by a group of opposition MPs led by Ondrej Dostal (Freedom and Solidarity/SaS).
The opposition submitted an amendment to the State Citizenship Act, through which it wanted to restore the state of affairs that had been in place before the adoption of the amendment in 2010, which deprives people of Slovak passports if they accept foreign citizenship. The opposition wanted a release from state citizenship at people's own request to be the only way to lose state citizenship. The MPs also wanted all those who have been deprived of Slovak passports by acquiring foreign citizenship since July 17, 2010, to be able to regain their Slovak citizenship without having to meet the conditions otherwise required for gaining citizenship. The opposition MPs also wanted to help Slovak citizens before the expected Brexit by amending the State Citizenship Act. They argued on the basis of Slovaks' urgent need to acquire foreign citizenship without losing their Slovak citizenship. People are losing their Slovak passports due to the State Citizenship Act that was adopted by Robert Fico's first government (2006-10) in response to Hungarian legislation that made it possible for ethnic Hungarians living outside Hungary to gain dual citizenship. More than 2,700 people have lost their Slovak passports to date under the act, mostly by acquiring Czech citizenship (over 600 people). There have been several attempts to mitigate the law since its adoption, but all have failed. As of February 2015, the Interior Ministry began returning Slovak citizenship to people who lost it after accepting foreign citizenship based on having permanent residence in the country in question. Slovak citizenship is restored by virtue of exemptions.
