Due to low turn-out in European Parliament elections, Slovakia is undermining its reputation, Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák said at a press conference following his meeting with his Romanian counterpart Titus Corlatean on Tuesday.
“This doesn't correspond to Slovakia's image as a pro-EU country. We'll be happy to see more people who support traditional European values take part in the election,” said Lajčák. In 2004 and 2009, Slovakia ended up bottom in terms of turn-out, with the figure equalling 19.64 percent five years ago. For comparison, Romania saw a voter turn-out of 29.47 percent in the same election. The two diplomats concurred on the importance of the EU as a global player that sets political, moral and economic standards for others. “However, this needs to be done in a way that will make sure that our standards don't hinder the competitiveness of our entrepreneurs and companies,” said Lajčák. The Slovak minister assured his Romanian counterpart of Slovakia's support for Romania when it comes to joining the Schengen zone.”
