Mess with the Constitutional Court elections continues

The repeated election of candidates for Constitutional Court judges were again postponed. They were supposed to take place on Thursday morning, however, the MPs moved it to later in the evening. Allegedly, the coalition needs more time to negotiate about their candidates. First, however, the parliamentary constitutional committee agreed on Thursday morning, that the vote should be public. In the first round of the election on Tuesday, MPs did not elect a single candidate. The MPs should select 18 candidates for constitutional judges and submit them to the president, who should then appoint nine judges to serve at the Constitutional Court for 12 years. The leader of SMER, Robert Fico, has given up his candidacy for the post of the constitutional judge; however, this does not mean that he could not become the Constitutional court's chairman in the future. Fico said on Tuesday that his ambition was to become the chair of the Constitutional Court. If the Parliament fails to appoint any candidate for the post of the constitutional judge in the repeated election held today, only four judges, without the chair Ivetta Macejková, would remain in the court as of February 16.
