We should pay due attention to the rights of LGBTI people, says public defender of rights Maria Patakyová. According to her, the current situation, with no law governing the family and private lives of same-sex couples in Slovakia, is not sustainable in the long run in view of Slovakia's international human rights commitments. "The Justice Ministry stated that it was preparing partial amendments to legislation on the preparation of which a representative of the Ombudswoman's office would participate, but it is necessary to modify not merely some selected aspects of the common life of same sex couples, but their common life at least at the level of the established judicature of the European Court of Human Rights," said Patakyová. The topic of the rights of LGBTI community in Slovakia has become part of the ongoing campaign for Presidential elections to be held in March, with various candidates expressing their positive or negative stances on the question of introducing registered partnerships for same-sex couples in Slovakia.
