Slovakia is preparing for a hard Brexit. Laws and their amendments, which Slovakia will prepare in connection with Brexit should be completed by mid-February. Afterwards the Slovak Parliament will vote on them in one package under the working name Lex Brexit in March.
An amendment approved by the Parliament on Wednesday states that if the United Kingdom remains a member of the EU at the beginning of the 2019-2024 electoral term, one of the Slovak MEPs will not take up his or her mandate until Brexit happens. Slovakia is supposed to be given one of the British seats after Brexit takes place, thus having 14 instead of 13 seats. The amendment passed in the Slovak Parliament is a reaction to the 'extraordinary situation' concerning a possible postponement of Brexit because the British Parliament did not approve the agreement on Brexit on January 15.
