Doubtful-quality beef from Poland may have reached Slovakia

Agriculture Minister Gabriela Matečná (Slovak National Party/SNS) has stated that it can't be ruled out that doubtful-quality beef from Poland may have reached Slovakia. Matečná was reacting to the fact that Polish police are investigating a slaughterhouse suspected of illegally trafficking in sick cattle, after the slaughterhouse was secretly filmed by a television reporter. As it is yet unknown whether the beef has found its way onto the Slovak market, Matečná appealed to consumers to buy Slovak food which has undergone complete quality controls. Slovakia's Veterinary and Food Administration has stated that targeted controls are being carried out at destination, wholesale, and retail outlets, including out-of-home sales. They added that so far they have not been officially informed about beef deliveries from the at-risk establishments in Poland, and that as soon as such information is received, the regional public health authorities in Slovakia will be informed.
