The European Commission has started infringement proceedings against Slovakia for inadequate implementation of the European Habitats and Birds Directives. The state of many species of animals and plants and their habitats in Slovakia is regarded as unfavorable. The Commission sent what is called a reasoned opinion to Slovakia, to which the country must reply within two months and explain what action it has taken or plans to take to address the situation. If the situation is not improved, the Commission could sue Slovakia at the European Court of Justice for non-compliance. According to Environment Ministry spokesman Tomáš Ferenčák, the Slovak side has not yet received official detailed information on the matter.
