Slovakia remembers Nazi reprisals

On Monday, Slovakia remembers the 74th anniversary of the burning of two central Slovak villages - Kľak and Ostrý Grún by Nazi Germany in 1945. This step was supposed to prevent the locals from supporting partisans taking part in the Slovak National Uprising. At the time, around 3,000 partisans were hiding in the vicinity of the villages. The inhabitants provided them with accommodation, clothing, groceries and helped them with intelligence and research activities. In January 1945, in the attack by the anti-partisan unit called Edelweiss, 148 people lost their lives. As part of the remembrance, commemorative events took place on Sunday, one day before the anniversary.
