Parliament backed a resolution with 84 MPs on Thursday expressing serious concerns about attempts to misuse the police crackdown at a Roma settlement in Moldava na Bodvou (Košice region) in June to create both anti-Roma and anti-police sentiment.
MPs at the same time took on board a resolution of the Government from 8 January. Ombudswoman Jana Dubovcova, who criticised the police intervention, took part at that Cabinet session, but wasn't given a chance to speak. Parliamentary Vice-chair Jana Laššáková (Smer-SD), who prepared the resolution for Parliament, said that opposition MPs, who initiated the extraordinary parliamentary session, didn't read the Government's resolution properly. “The Government pointed out that the ombudsman must also act lawfully,” said Laššáková, pointing to Dubovcova’s efforts to drag the Government into the case and politicise it.
