Interest in becoming a professional soldier in the Slovak Armed Forces hasn't been very high, so the Defence Ministry is entertaining the idea of launching a nationwide discussion on reintroducing compulsory military service, Defence Minister Peter Gajdos (SNS) has told TASR press agency in an interview. He added that this issue would also require a considerable investment in infrastructure. For now, the ministry is trying to make the profession more attractive by increasing the salaries of professional soldiers by 40-percent in 2019. The opposition party Freedom and Solidarity has criticized the idea of reintroducing compulsory military service in Slovakia.
