A five-member European Parliament delegation is visiting Slovakia from Monday to Wednesday to examine the drawing of EU funds in the agriculture sector. Members of the EP Budgetary Control Committee (CONT) aim to get to know more about the alleged misuse of agriculture subsidies in the area. They will meet local farmers and representatives of the region. Subsequently, the delegation will move to Bratislava to meet Agriculture Minister Gabriela Matečná (Slovak National Party), representatives of the Agricultural Payment Agency (PPA), NGOs, the special prosecutor as well as investigative journalists. Investigative journalist Jan Kuciak who was murdered along with his fiancée in February wrote about the shady drawing of EU funds in eastern Slovakia.
In general, the main tasks of the EP Committee on Budgetary Control are monitoring the efficiency of the EU's expenditures and examining the effective drawing of EU funds by the member states.
