Slovakia and Serbia preparing debt settlement agreement

Slovakia and Serbia could sign in early 2019 an agreement on settling the latter's debt amounting to some €6 million going back to the times of the former Yugoslavia, informed Slovak Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini. As he added after his Tuesday talks with his Serbian counterpart Ana Brnabic, the money is planned to be be spent on Slovaks living abroad.

"Slovakia prefers the alternative of a one-off partial payment of this sum that will be considered as the definitive repayment of the debt," said Pellegrini at a press conference at the Government Office. Pellegrini and Brnabic also discussed economic and political issues. The Slovak premier stressed that Slovakia supports Serbia's attempts to join the EU. He went on to say that Slovakia has not changed its attitude towards Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence and continues to support the territorial integrity of Serbia. Brnabic praised Slovakia's attitudes concerning both issues.
