Slovakia will never accept UN migration pact, says Prime Minister

Slovakia is and will be a sovereign state and will decide on its own who can come to live on its soil and under what conditions, Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini (Smer-SD) stated on Thursday, in response to a resolution approved by Parliament, in which lawmakers are asking the Government to reject the UN Global Compact on Migration. "I welcome the decision of Parliament, the concurrence across the political spectrum, and perceive this as a declaration of broad consensus about foreign policy," claimed the Prime Minister. According to Pellegrini, the only remaining issue to be decided is the manner, in which Slovakia should express its disapproval of the UN pact. He pointed that there are countries intending to voice their negative stance at the Marrakesh talks but also countries due to convey their rejection via absence. "Among these are, for instance, Italy and Austria, but I expect Switzerland to act in the same way," claimed Pellegrini. Whether or not Slovakia takes part in the Marrakesh talks is to be decided by the Government at its session on Wednesday, December 5.
