Slovakia is getting ready to boost its agricultural sector. Currently, harvests in Slovakia are as much as 40-60 percent poorer than in other EU-member countries and while crop production is growing moderately, in animal production the country has been deteriorating.
Moreover, while 10 years ago about 10% of the Slovak population has worked in the agriculture sector, today the number is as low as just a little over 2%. These are all findings from the Agriculture Ministry. The Ministry wants to rectify the situation with its new strategy for the period of 2014-2020, which was approved by the Government on Wednesday. It envisages many improvements in the farming sector, one of them being that the number of people working in the sector is to increase by almost 20,000 by the year 2020.
